Leg Fifteen--Final drive!!!

We did it!! Today we drive 6 hours from Tok to Anchorage, Ak. It seemed like the longest drive, but it wasn't even close to it! We did have seem the best views today!
The pics don't do this justice.
......And this is the name of a creek in Alaska! Lol

First time seeing a glacier!!!

A total of 6,000 miles, 15 different legs in 20 days!! We have arrived!  We are close to Anchorage, at Joint Base Elmidorf Richardson. We have military temporary housing for 8 days. In that time,  we will find a place to live. Not sure if it will be on post or off post. If we choose off post, it will probably be Eagle River, Ak.

So it's true, it doesn't get completely dark. It gets to about where you would start thinking to turn on your headlights at about 1am to 3am. Then it progressively gets brighter from there.
The weather has been 60-70's during the day and 50's at night.

Tomorrow, we will pick up Drew's truck which has been in Anchorage for about 2.5 weeks. Our stuff has been here since the 6th of June. The army will keep it in storage up to three months for no charge. We will get it even we find a place.

Leg Fourteen- Back in the USA

America!!!!
We crossed into ALASKA!!
On Alaska time, one hour behind the pacific time zone.
                  Boarder crossing.
It was very easy, they didn't want to see Drew's orders or the dog's health certificate. Just passports, registration to the car, and Drew's military ID.
We stopped at this gas station .... Not to get gas thankfully... Check out the price.
I wrote our names in the bathroom
Suzanne and Drew. 6/29/13 drove from Alabama.

Before getting to Alaska, we did have some beautiful views...
           Snow capped mountains
Love these pics of Bobby and me taken back in Ohio.
Big yawn, guess I was boring him.

We are staying the night in Tok, Alaska in a cabin.
                      Our cabin

Check out the grass the roof and the lawn mowers.
We ate at a so called famous place here in Tok.

       Enjoyed an Alaska made beer.

On a sad note, Frances McGuire, who I grew up with in Saudi died yesterday. She was in Thailand. My heart goes out to the McGuire family. I am so sorry for your loss.

Today in Whitehorse

Today, in Whitehorse, we took a nice walk, ate some good food and enjoyed a live band.

S.S. Klondike from the gold rush in late 1890's

The path we walked around the Yukon River.
My view at a bench over looking the Yukon River
Drew's view overlooking the Yukon River.

We head to Tok, ALASKA TOMORROW.     Back in the US.

Leg Thirteen- Next to the Clouds

Below is what I wrote yesterday. I didn't post it because the internet was not working....

Literally, we were next to the clouds when we started our drive today.

Absolutely beautiful with the clouds low and us at a higher elevation. We could see the clouds making a white fluffy cotton blanket that the mountains disappeared into.

We drove to Whitehorse today and will be here for two nights. It was a long drive today, 8 hours on winding roads. We took our time though and stopped at Liard Hot Springs and Watson Lake. The hot springs were fantastic and so warm!! It is a naturally occurring hot spring protected by the province of British Columbia.  Average temperature of 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

We talked with a lot of different people there. Most at this point, are either headed to or from Alaska. We talked with a mom and her older daughter. They were at the same hotel two nights ago in Fort St. John and then again last night at the same place. The daughter lives in Eagle River, Ak, which is next to Anchorage. They were very nice and she got our number.
We also met Ted, he does this trip twice a year and this particular time, he is driving his '67 Chevy pickup.

This is Ted's truck and we actually passed him yesterday and today we met him!! The truck goes to about 60 mph so this is the sign on the truck!! Drew took this picture as I passed him... yesterday.
The sign says, " Why are you still behind me? GO AROUND."

Not 15 minutes after we left the hot springs we saw some friends.

Buffalo just hanging out by the road. So far, we have seen a moose, a deer and sheep with a young baby. Keeping our eyes peeled, because we would rather not collide with one

Crossed over to the Yukon. The last province until we get to Alaska.

Made it to Watson Lake for lunch. We ate at a place that served buffalo. Drew had a buffalo burger, maybe a cousin to one we saw on the road. :) I had a grilled cheese.  We had lunch outside and went next door to a museum about the northern lights.

Enjoyed a movie about the Northern lights on a screen that was directly overhead in a dome shape. The seats laid back so you could look up easily.

The other thing that Watson Lake is known for is the Sign Post Forest.
People have been putting signs up since 1946 when the Alaska Highway was first completed.

Backtracking to last night.... Our original plan was to set up camp by Liard Hot Springs, but after looking at the weather,p0 we decided against that. It's a good thing!!! It stormed, not just rained, but stormed all night. So we booked a cabin at the Northern Rockies Lodge.

The Main lodge where they have a restaurant, hotel rooms, and gas!!
The pups in the Northen Rockies! Lucky dog!

They offer flights to remote places.    Clouds were too low to fly.

Drew was getting something out of the car last night and called me over. He said, "I think she only has two legs!" Well, come to find out, Pelly, was a three legged dog ! Yoyo played with her like no other. They immediately realized their common bond. Bobby felt left out because they weren't paying him any attention.... After all, he has four legs.

Pelly was shot in her front left leg and was found wondering in a dump. Her soon-to-be owner was the vet tech, Catherine, where she was treated. Catherine nursed her back to health and took her home, like we did for Yoyo.

Just two more legs to go.... From Whitehorse - Tok, AK and Tok - Anchorage.
